A Family-Born Legacy Rooted in Care
Mane 'n Tail began in 1970 on a small farm in Phillipsburg, New Jersey. At the time, Phil and Bonnie Katzev were raising Arabian horses and struggling to find quality grooming products. Back then, horse shampoo and conditioner didn't exist. Some people used to reach for dish soap, but it dried out the horse’s coat, mane, and tail by stripping away their natural oils.
A Conditioner Built on Chemistry
Phil, a skilled chemist, created a breakthrough formula: a deep-conditioning treatment that kept horse hair soft, shiny, and tangle-free. That first product became the legendary Mane 'n Tail Original Conditioner, followed by our now-famous Mane 'n Tail Original Shampoo. Because these new pH balanced formulas were designed for the mane and tail area, the name came naturally - and a new standard in equine grooming was born.
From Horses to Humans - The Crossover That Started It All
Phil tested his formulas on himself to ensure they were gentle and effective. Before long, other equestrians did the same and they loved the results. The horse-to-human hair care crossover took off, and Mane 'n Tail quietly found its way into people's showers as well as their barns.
That simple beginning led to something big: a trusted brand that bridges horse grooming and personal hair care, built on performance, quality, and care.
Still Proudly Family-Owned and Made in the USA
Today, Mane 'n Tail remains a family-run business located in Easton Pennsylvania. Phil and Bonnie's youngest son, Devon Katzev, took over as CEO at just 27 years old - and more than 30 years later, he still leads with the same passion, purpose, and pride.
Continuing The Family Legacy
Devon continues to expand the brand his parents built, overseeing product development and innovation through product launches like Spray 'n White: a whitening shampoo that is bleach free and doesn't stain, and Ultimate Gloss: a rich lathering shampoo that leaves a glossy finish while being saddle safe.
His family's original mission remains a key part of everything we do: to satisfy the customer through our high-quality grooming products for people and the animals they love and can use daily.
