Denis Lynch and GC Chopin’s Bushi, and Hans-Dieter Dreher and Prinz had a strong performance in Round One. Round Two brought some heartache for the team but they are back in action July 5th-7th in Paris, France! Look out for our New York Empire riders as they battle against the best of the best!
Monaco, the French Principality, is certainly no stranger to the rich and famous! A virtual ‘playground’ for the ‘jet-set’ and those who love the excitement, glamour and rich history of the French Riviera.
The magical back-drop of Port d’Hercule and the iconic Prince’s Palace in Monaco will provide a three-day feast of top-class show jumping alongside fantastic entertainment from the 27th – 29th June.
The best international riders and horses descend on the Principality to face challenging technical courses. One of the smallest arenas on the Tour, where daring, scope and bravery are the key ingredients essential for success. This event is truly unique in the world of show jumping. Watched over by the super-yachts and nestled in the former Formula 1 pit lane, it draws crowds from all around the world.
The enchanting Riviera location and luxurious facilities at the Monaco event combine to deliver a stunning experience for families, VIPs, sponsors, owners and riders. Monaco, which also plays host to Formula One and ATP Masters tennis, is a hub of sport with many high-profile fans in attendance. HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and other members of the Royal Family are patrons of the event and are joined business leaders and celebrities to cheer on the riders.
Speaking of riders, Denis Lynch, Hans-Dieter Dreher and team owner Georgina Bloomberg are representing our team, the New York Empire! Last year, Denis put the pressure on, and secured third place in a neck to neck finish. He is back again this year, and with the support of his teammates, the New York Empire team is going for the blue! We are wishing them the best of luck!
Before you explore Monaco…here are a few facts that root the Principality to the United States and loving horses!
Over 50 years ago, we waived, “Adieu” to our own American ‘Princess’ or as close to it, as the United States comes, to go marry the prince of her dreams, Prince Rainer of Monaco. That lady would be Philadelphia heiress, and well-known Hollywood actress, the stunning Grace Kelly. She crossed an ocean to live a ‘fairytale’ life, after she hung up her acting career, and devoted her life to become Her Royal Highness of Monaco.
The elegant beauty spent her years in Monaco, not only as a mother to three, head-line grabbing children, but giving back when and where ever she was able, heading many charitable organizations, and performing her daily royal duties. Always living up to her name, she did it with style and ‘grace’!
Grace Kelly, in her youth, growing up just outside of Philadelphia was an accomplished equestrian. In fact, Grace is captured in a famous picture of her riding through Central Park NYC, side-saddle on her six-year-old horse, Daisy. Grace passed along her love of horses to her oldest daughter, Caroline and eventually to her granddaughter Charlotte Casiraghi, who is an accomplished rider in her own right, and has competed at the Longines global Champions Tour events in the past.
Sadly, Her Royal Highness was killed in a tragic car accident in 1982, a few years before her lovely granddaughter was born…however, one can only believe Charlotte feels a connection to her grandmother every time she gets on a horse.
So, Monaco, as we mentioned, is no stranger to hosting major sporting events. Monaco is a tiny independent city-state on France’s Mediterranean coastline known for its upscale casinos, yacht-lined harbor and prestigious Grand Prix motor race, which runs through Monaco’s streets once a year.
It is truly fitting that Global Championship League has an important stop here. Monte-Carlo, its major district, is home to an elegant belle-époque casino complex and ornate Salle Garnier opera house.
It also has many luxe hotels, boutiques, nightclubs and restaurants. If you find yourself bored in Monte-Carlo, then you must not know where to go or what to do! Another James ‘Bondesque’ backdrop, Monaco, especially Monte Carlo is motion picture perfect! In fact, Grace Kelly filmed “To Catch A Thief” here with Cary Grant and that is when it is said that she fell in love with the Principality.
There is a famous winding road scene which illustrates the Monaco mountainous terrain extremely well. The fast speeding cars and winding roads are certainty not for the faint of heart!
So, you may want to hire a car to get around Monaco, unless you are a complete dare-devil!
Places that are a must scene, in no particular order:
Larvotto Beach- one of Monaco’s most popular, and it is free to the public and close to the center of Monte-Carlo. A nice way to take in the French Riveria and all its beauty.
Monte-Carlo Casino- The beaux-arts building designed by Charles Garnier (he designed the Paris Opera)…is a sight to behold, and yes, it was inspiration for Ian Fleming’s first James Bond book!
Prince’s Palace (Palais du Prince) – Home to the Grimaldi Family (since the 13thCentury). It is the official royal residence, and was home to Prince Rainier III and his lovely wife, Princess Grace. Today, their son, Prince Albert II and his wife, Princess Charlene call it home.
Oceanographic Museum of Monaco- Founded in 1910 by Prince Albert I (a sea captain)…many treasures in the museum/ aquarium were actually found during many of his explorations.
Monaco Cathedral- This standing Cathedral was built in the late 19thcentury. Housed underneath this great landmark, hails the original cathedral in respect to the grave of the 13th century Grace Kelly.
Princess Grace Rose Garden-Thousands of rose blossoms makeup most of Fontvielle Park, as well as contemporary sculptures strewn throughout the grounds. It is a great place to explore and commune with nature.
Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo- “ The Sea Baths of Monte-Carlo” is where those ‘in-the-know” go to be pampered. Treat yourself to a memorable experience wrapped in seaweed body wraps and anti-aging treatments. Relax, kick-back and enjoy.
Exotic Garden- The garden lies along La Condamine’s cliffs and presents over 1,000 species of plants. Find the deep underground cave to ‘get lost in’ and explore the hidden beauties!
Museum of Antique Automobiles of H.S.H. (private collection)- This museum houses much of cars gifted by Prince Rainier III, a true passion of his…car collecting. You may see everything from racing cars to the Rolls Royce that carried the Prince and Grace Kelly off to their wedding.
Monte-Carlo Harbor- lining the coastline…see where the rich and famous play and dock their yachts. White sails and sparkling chrome reflects the tranquil waters to create a spectacular backdrop for a selfie!
You may not have enough time to do it all…but do your best to get it in! Don’t forget to catch the action in the arena Thursday night! If you can not make it, tune into the Global Champions Tour website and watch it live!
