The other day after a ride, I noticed that my horse’s face wasn’t the same bright color as the rest of his body. I usually hose down my horse after each ride, but I’m not a big believer in hosing off the face.
How do you wash your horse’s face?
Liv Gude, a professional groom and owner of Professional Equine Grooms suggests these safety guidelines:
Use another person to hold your horse instead of cross ties if you are unsure about how your horse will react. If he reacts terribly, remove the offending piece of equipment and do something else that isn’t so scary before you adjust your approach and try again. I would suggest starting with a wet washrag, then sponge long before even thinking about using a hose (at a trickle…)
The washrag and sponge combination worked really well for my horse! I eventually tried the hose on the “mist” setting and he doesn’t seem to mind that.
The grooming guide on the Mane ‘n Tail website suggests washing your horse’s face after you shampooed your horse and you’re on to the rinsing.
A gentle body wash that has long been a horse owner’s dream, is Mane ‘n Tail’s Spray-Away. It is pH balanced for sensitive skin; gentle enough that it can be used over cuts, scrapes and minor abrasions. Try it on your horse!
